Currently reading the epos of John Julius Norwich about the history of the Mediterranean (over 700 pages). The first readings made me clear that this could be a very promising book for me. It starts ca. 1,500 BC with a short description of civilizations prior to the Greek (Mycenaean, Minoan). Then quickly jumps to the bloody wars of the Greeks with the Persians. Lot of historic information about the place I would love to sail (Corfu: 670 BC the first naval war as known to mankind).
This book makes me wonder if it would be possible to enter all these historic information in to a Google Earth-file and then include that in my ancientcoasts.com website. This map should then also include all the relevant information already available on the Internet…. Would make me some kind of publisher… Would that provide me with the money I need to buy a sail yacht?

In a month or so I will be going to Levkas for a week of sailing. About 4 years ago I went there for the first time. It is just so amazing, feeling the history blend into your veins (I like exaggerating).
My idea is to start my trip next year there and from there going to Korfu, Italy, Sicily etc. I hope I don’t buy a boat accidentally. Then I will have to start my trip immediately….
Herewith some photo’s of 2004:

Wow, it al goes so fast. A year a go it was hacking the hardway to include a Google Earth map in your website which would show your photo’s in a picasa album (see blacksea.ressing.net for Version 2.0 and my 1.0 attempt in lc06.ressing.net).
Now with some plug-ins ( NextGen Gallery and XML Google Maps Coding) you just upload your pictures to a Picasa web-album or your WordPress webserver, add a link and it’s finished.
Where will we be in 5 4 3 2 years?
A quick example:
And now the finetuning…
